Constellation,  Haifa Museum of Art

The installation "Constellation" combines three-dimensionality and two-dimensionality: a window made of fishing line with an animation of dots and lines. At the entrance to the dark space is a wall with a window, through which a magical night landscape resembling a forest is slowly revealed, projected onto the opposite wall. The image is composed of many points of light, varying in size and in intensity. The origin of the consciousness of the line is in the connection between the points, similar to a connect-the-dots game on paper, where a line is drawn between scattered and numbered points to create a figurative image, or when looking at the sky for the imaginary connections between a group of stars to create a constellation like "The Big Dipper".
Amitai-Lavi's installation is based on spatial illusions that blur the boundaries between flat and deep, two-dimensional and three-dimensional, interior and exterior, appearance and disappearance, painting and sculpture, and thus remind us of the transition from thread to line and trace, and vice versa.
The essence of Amitai-Lavi's work is summarized well in the words of curator Tami Katz-Freiman: "The secret of the magic lies in the transformation that Amitai-Lavi manages to create within a given space with a minimum of material means and a maximum of labor hidden from sight...to create an optical and poetic illusion."
